Why You Need to Rest

We’re led to believe that in order to see results, we must go, go, go at the gym seven days a week. What would you say if I told you that rest is just as important as a good HIIT or strength training workout?

Friends, it’s true!

Whether you’re looking through a physical or a mental perspective, rest is necessary for our bodies to thrive and for us to see the changes in ourselves we are seeking.

When we rest, our bodies repair. Lifting heavy and pushing ourselves to reach our target heart rates during our workouts stresses our bodies. Whether it be our heart or our muscles, we are creating a challenge for our bodies to perform at a higher level it does not normally reach when we go about our daily activities. Giving the body time to rest gives it time to repair itself and build muscle and the capacity to go further during the next workout.

Rest decreases the chances of injury and sickness. A worn out body is one that is headed down the road of disaster. Have you ever noticed that you tend to get sick more often when you are tired or worn down? Ever noticed your form start to lack as you get to your last rep of the final set? It is SO important to listen in during these moments and take the time to rest - these are both symptoms your body needs it!

Taking some time off gives you the motivation to get back at it. I don’t know about you, but when I take Sunday as a full recovery day I am fully motivated to get back at it Monday. I look forward to my Tabata workout - no matter how difficult it is to complete (hello, Dirty Dozen!). Taking the time to recover not only gives your body a physical break, but it replenishes your motivation and mental state.

Physical rest can lead to a mental reset. There have been times where I have left the gym feeling defeated and tired. Taking a day off from the gym has allowed me to reset and remind myself of why I am pushing myself to do better each swipe of the gym key. It is also a great time to remind myself of how far I have come and how far I will go if I continue!

Rest is crucial to any successful wellness journey - it is how our bodies achieve the growth we are seeking as we lead healthier lifestyles. This week, I challenge you to take one day of full rest and recovery and see how your body reacts. I’m sure you’ll find that you have more energy and are motivated to get right back into the rhythm the next day.
