Get Those Greens In

It’s no secret that greens are good for you. However, how often do we make sure we are getting enough of them each day? If you’re like me they always end up in the grocery cart, but the real challenge begins when you arrive home and have to remind yourself to incorporate them into your meals! Today, I’d like to share a few tips of how to get those greens into your diet.

#1 - Add them to a smoothie. The great thing about greens are that they can easily be mixed into a variety of things without affecting the taste much. My favorite way to mix them in? A green smoothie! I add collagen, almond milk, protein powder, spinach, and some avocado and blend until it’s nice and thick. Not only does it taste delicious, but I know I am getting the nutrients I need when I drink it!

#2 - Add them as a side to your meals. I love a good salad, and it is easily a staple in my household. They aren’t always the main course; it’s easy to add a colorful salad to almost any meal. Salads not your thing? That’s okay! Try roasting Brussels sprouts in the oven, steaming asparagus, or sauteing some green beans with garlic. Your family will love it!

#3 - Use them as a swap for other ingredients. One of my favorite ways to ensure I am adding some green to my meals is to swap out bread for lettuce. Not only does it cut out the carbs and processed foods, but it tastes fresh and delicious!

#4 - Dress them up! I can’t usually grab a handful of broccoli and just eat it plain - and my family can’t either! If you’re trying to increase the amount of greens in your diet, try dressing them up with different seasonings, oils, or other veggies to make them more to your liking.

Greens are important to any diet. Not only do they have essential vitamins and minerals (hello Vitamin E!), but they are a great source of a healthy carbohydrate and protein. They help fuel your body on the inside to do things at its prime efficiency level, while simultaneously help you keep your energy levels high and revving! This week, I challenge you to get those greens in and tag me in your meals on Instagram @jennymire. I’d love to see what you do!
