New Year Resolution Mistakes You've Made and What you Need to do Differently This Year
It’s halfway through the first month of 2019, and you may find yourself struggling to stay on track with your New Year Resolutions. In a previous blog post, I shared my biggest tips to building strong, meaningful goals to make it through - but if you’re finding it is becoming tough, you may be making one of these common mistakes.
You weren’t specific of how you will accomplish your goal. You’ve determined your “why”, wrote down your goal in positive language, shared it with others, but something is just not clicking. This may be because you have not yet determined how you will reach your goal and what steps you will take along the way to ensure you meet it and track your progress. Take time to lay out the groundwork, and I know you can do it!
You haven’t set deadlines. If you’re like me, unless there is a clear deadline, there’s no rush to get going. There’s all the time in the world, right? This may be true for some things, but the reason we set New Year Resolutions is to guide us through the New Year and accomplish these objectives. Look at your goal, set a realistic timeline, and let’s crush it!
You’re lacking consistency. Do you find yourself wanting to give up when it gets hard or feeling impatient when the goal is not immediately met, so you turn towards old habits instead of pushing forward? Friends, consistency is key. If we are not consistent with our actions and intentions, we cannot expect to see results. Instead of getting trapped in a negative mindset, take a breath and take time to refocus.
You haven’t asked for help. Sometimes in order to accomplish a goal, we must seek out others for support and the tools needed to reach it. This may be a simple check in text for accountability, or a sit down conversation of what is needed to get where we want to be. Avoid running in circles and seek out help from those you love. You won’t regret it!
You’re not rewarding yourself. Did you make it to the gym four times last week? Stay on track with your nutrition throughout a stressful day at work? Drink a gallon of water before the end of the day? These achievements should be celebrated in a big way! You’re making great strides towards bettering your health, which should not go unnoticed.
A New Year is a great time for change and can set the tone for some great accomplishments. However if you find you are getting stuck, I encourage you to take a step back and reflect to see if you are making any of these mistakes and adjust. Need help getting started?
