Cleaning Up Your Eating
Around every corner it seems that temptation exists when it comes to eating. Walking into your local bakery or grocery store is an experience for our senses. The desire to grab convenient and nutrient void foods is often a default because it “tastes” good and “satisfies” our cravings. But how many times do we give in to our lack of planning or simply our desire to eat whatever sounds good and still feel unsatisfied or ultimately just plain hungry still? I get it, friends…like you, I enjoy treats and the like but I also know that when we understand fueling our body and eating GOOD food can go hand in hand, we can set ourselves up for long term wins that we will see pay off in countless ways sooner than later. Because of this, knowing that how we eat in the catalyst for thriving health or struggling in your health it is my passion to teach you how you can begin changing your habits.
While it may not always be the easiest challenge to overcome, cleaning up your diet and making a decision to choose heath over instant gratification or convenience IS possible. Not only is it something you can achieve as a lifestyle, it is something you can begin to implement even now. Part of doing this starts with what we can control today. Stop setting yourself up for failure by believing you have to overhaul everything from the get go. While this method may work for some, many of us will do much better in the long run when we make and stick with one decision at a time. Today, I want to share with you three ways you can start cleaning up your diet and look to make measurable and lasting changes that truly will help you start feeling better immediately and hopefully will motivate you to stick it out and continue to thrive and dive further into a more balanced and clean eating lifestyle.
So here are three ways to begin, today!
1. Eliminate Soda, Juices and Sugary Coffee Drinks— thats right— Did you know that drinking sugary beverages can cause multiple issues for you every day? Take out the fact that sugar addiction is rampant and soda is basically pure sugar, there are many other things that create havoc for your body when you drink soda and the like. For example :
“Dehydration– Because of the high sugar, sodium and caffeine content in soda, it dehydrates the body and over a long period of time can cause chronic dehydration. Bad for the teeth– Drinking soda regularly causes plaque to build up on the teeth and can lead to cavities and gum disease.” Not to mention “The Water– The water used in soda is just simple tap water and can contain chemicals like chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals.” And if you needed any other reason to stop consuming soda or sugar based beverages: “Obesity– Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times.”https://wellnessmama.com/379/reasons-to-avoid-soda/
Decide to cut these out and you’ll see and FEEL the results pretty quickly. Decide to make these a “once and a while treat” and sub in naturally flavored water, herbal teas, almond milk lattes or a LaCroix carbonated water instead!
2. Cut Back on Processed Foods—I know they are convenient, taste good in the moment and seem harmless these days when you see “natural” scrawled across the box. But processed foods are far from good for you. Even when they are labeled to lead you to believe otherwise.
“Processed foods tend to have a long shelf life, thanks to the added sugar, salt, and preservatives within. If that wasn't bad enough, they're often stripped or void of nutrients. As a result of their less-than-stellar nutritional status, they steal away an opportunity where you could be nourishing your body with whole foods--and may do some damage in its place. "Processed foods can be so dangerous because you end up getting a lot of excess sugar, salt, and added ingredients that most people are not aware of," says Isabel Smith, MS, RD, CDN, registered dietitian and founder of Isabel Smith Nutrition.” http://www.eatthis.com/
Instead of stocking your pantry with these foods, focus on shopping the perimeter of your grocery store and fill your cart with fresh options. Lots of produce, meats and fresh options. Look for greek yogurts, eggs and organic options. Trust that again, you’ll start to feel better when you fuel your body with real food. You’ll also notice changes in your energy level, clearer skin, better sleep and you’ll start to crave eating real foods over processed foods. The benefits are too many to name— but they should be motivation to try cutting out the boxed foods!
3. Choose 1 hour of your week and Meal Prep- I know this can seem overwhelming but I’ve inviting you to consider taking just ONE hour of your week to plan out a menu, prep some veggies (simply by washing, cutting and storing in easy to grab containers) portion out some nuts, prepare some fruit- cook some chicken- prepare. Have things ready to grab and go so you have your arsenal ready. Instead of not knowing what lunch will be, you’ll have it on hand. Which makes you less likely to splurge on junk. You’ll also feel more in control which will keep you motivated throughout the day. Ladies, you can even plan your cheats and decide when you know you’ll splurge. One hour of hard boiling eggs, grilling some chicken or salmon, chopping veggies and making a menu plan will be the best thing you do all week for your success when it comes to eating well.
