Kai Meal Replacement Shake Review & Recipe

Over the past year, I have truly loved using the Silver Fern Brand probiotics. I have noticed such a difference in my digestive system and less bloat overall. Having healthy gut bacteria is KEY to keeping weight off – and boy is that true for me! Read more about my experience with the Wai Probiotic Drink Mix here. When Silver Fern Brand asked me to review their new Kai Meal Replacement Whey Protein Shake  – I jumped on the opportunity! And I am quite surprised by my findings and thoughts on this product. But before I share my review, let’s dive into protein and why it is important.

These days, you see protein shakes on every grocery store shelf and all over social media. New companies are popping up left and right with the “latest and the greatest protein shake.” This is great because a good protein shake can actually help you lose weight and/or build muscle, however, we must be informed about the quality of protein that are in these shakes.

Why are protein shakes beneficial? Protein is used in our bodies for the production of muscles. They help build and repair muscles (which in turn burns more fat at rest) as well as support proper cell, tissue and organ structure.  Our bodies cannot “store” protein, so it needs to be replenished daily. I like to tell my clients that a starting point for how much protein you should digest daily is .8-1 gram per pound of body weight you are. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs you should have between 120-150 grams of protein per day. So to reach that goal, protein shakes are a great supplement.

What is the best time for protein shakes? When you exercise, you are creating micro-tears in your muscles that in turn build up stronger upon repair. So upon completion of a workout is really the best time to get some protein in your system to assist in the repair process. Because solid food takes more time to digest, it can be beneficial to utilize a protein shake during this time.  Digestion time is much faster with protein shakes and they can get to the muscles sooner than solid food. However, pay attention to how much protein you actually absorb from the shake - be sure to research this before choosing your protein.

Which protein is the best? When searching for good protein powders, it is really important to look for a few key things. First off, how many grams of protein are actually in each serving? I like my shakes to have over 20g protein per serving at the minimum. And secondly, how many grams are actually absorbed (as I mentioned above)? This is really important as a lot of companies do not list this because of the simple fact so few grams are actually absorbable.

Other things to look for include:

– Is it gluten free? – Does it have added sugar? – Does it come from grass fed cows without antibiotics? – Is it Non GMO? – Does it have essential amino acids? – Does it have a prebiotic or probiotic? – Does it taste ok? – Does it really curb appetite? – Is it low in net carbs?

In my research on the Kai Meal Replacement Whey Protein, I am pleased to say that it passes ALL of my tests!

The Kai Meal Replacement Whey Protein Shake from Silver Fern Brand really is a great choice. The amount of fiber helps keep digestion regular as well as lowers the net carbs– which is great in a meal replacement shake. I truly am impressed with this product having 27g of protein per serving and 22g actually being absorbed! This is great! And with 17g fiber, the net carb count is extremely low which works with my carb cycling lifestyle on low carb days. This protein also contains a prebiotic and no artificial sugars – which is so hard to find these days! This is not only just protein but an actual MEAL REPLACEMENT protein!
