Could There Actually be Benefits of Intermittent Fasting?

Friends, there are always fads and trends in the health and fitness world that end up being a flash in the pan. Some of us have tried one or more of these only to find ourselves disappointed when “results” don’t last. So today I want to share a bit on a process that is probably one you’ve heard about more and more that is NOT a trend and truly does benefit you and will yield results!  

Intermittent Fasting.

Yes, while Intermittent Fasting is all the rage these days, there is no fad or trend to be found around this.  And the reason why is because research shows Intermittent Fasting benefits everyone. This may seem counterintuitive in light of the fact that most of us have been told throughout our lives that we need to eat breakfast early to fuel our day and to eat small meals throughout the day.  Here’s why intermittent fasting debunks that philosophy: When you don't eat for a while, several things happen in your body. Instead of being in constant digestion mode- your body is able to focusing on repairing and resting.

Did you know that your body initiates important cellular repair processes and changes hormone levels to make stored body fat more accessible. Essentially and more easily put, when you fast, insulin levels drop and human growth hormone increases.

Pretty interesting and makes sense, right!? Here are three other amazing benefits of Intermittent Fasting I have personally experienced as have countless clients I have worked with over the last two years who have implemented IF in their routines.

  1. Reduction in body fat and weight- adding IF into your weekly routine paired with strategic exercise and nutrition is a recipe for success.  Your metabolism will increase and your body will become more of a fat burner (reaching into your fat stores to burn) rather than a constant sugar-burner.  

  2. Reduces Inflammation- many of us suffer from chronic, and painful/annoying inflammation in our bodies. Inflammation can lead to weight gain and unwanted fat. Studies show that that fasting produces an anti-inflammatory effect on the Neuroimmune system (nervous and immune system).

  3. Helps Establish Routine and Identify Hunger- Instead of allowing emotions to dictate our hunger having a routine that informs our eating cycle can be very helpful.  This may sound rigid but for those who are looking to conquer emotional eating and self sabotage. Fasting gives you the opportunity to find what hunger really feels like, and to help you develop a healthy relationship with food and desire for nutrient dense, filling whole foods.

I totally recommend giving Intermittent Fasting a try- but do this with a strategic approach and some education. Please PLEASE do not try this on your own.
