How to Stay Mentally Motivated during the Holidays

Merry Christmas, friends! With Christmas only one day away, it can be easy to lose motivation to keep going in our health, fitness, and even our daily routines. Today, I’d like to share a few tips that help me when I find my motivation losing stride.

  1. Set small, daily goals. At the start of each day or the night before, create a power list that has the top five things you need to do the next day. What things are at the highest priority? What absolutely needs to be done before the day ends? By setting small goals, even larger projects can become less intimidating because you are focusing on a smaller aspect of it! Often, my top five will include drinking enough water, getting my workout in, and two to three more things that need my full attention for the day. When I do this, I find myself less overwhelmed and motivated to keep pushing forward!

  2. Plan for self-care. This time of year, it can be easy to push our needs to the side as we focus on preparing parties, events, and other experiences for others. However, I challenge you to keep this in mind - you cannot pour from an empty cup. If you do not take care of you first, you won’t be able to take care of others! Nor will you have the mental motivation to do so. Fill your cup - whether this means heading to the gym for an hour, practicing yoga, taking a bubble bath, or going to bed early - it’s so important to take care of you, too.

  3. Be grateful. With everything going on, take time at the beginning of each day to think about what you are thankful for. Change your verbiage from, “I have to”, to “I get to”. I get to go shopping for food that will fuel my family. I get to clean my house, so it is a safe and warm place to be. A simple word change can mean wonders for your motivation, and it will definitely change your outlook!

Setting small goals, taking time for self-care, and being grateful are all large pieces of the puzzle in staying motivated in daily activities. They’ve definitely made a difference in my life! I hope your holiday is filled with lots of love, laughs, and fun.
