Menopause and Weight Loss
For many women, menopause can have a negative effect on weight loss efforts. Menopause officially begins when a women has not had a period for 12 months. At this point, she may find that shedding extra weight becomes a bit more difficult than it once had been. This is due largely to the fact that most women’s insulin levels are thrown out of whack as they become more and more insulin resistant with age. In addition, metabolism slows down at this point due to a loss of lean muscle mass, and fluctuating hormone levels can cause a woman’s body to store fat during this stage of life.
So, how do we compensate for this type of change?
During this season of life, it is important to really dial in our nutrition and workouts. Intermittent fasting and carb cycling are an effective way to combat insulin resistance and supply your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. In addition, it is incredibly important that women at this stage of life engage in resistance training. Cardio alone will eat into your muscle stores, slowing down metabolism even further. However, resistance training will help women build up lean muscle to their metabolic rate. This, paired with an effective carb cycle, will help women going through menopause stave off weight gain and stay lean.
A few other things to keep in mind during menopause…
Stress levels can be elevated during this time, which can have a negative impact on weight loss. Do your best to find effective ways to cope with stress and anxiety during this time.
Sleep can be a challenge during menopause, which can lead to weight gain. Use a magnesium spray and some lavender to help improve sleep quality. Be sure to work out AT LEAST 4 hours prior to bed, and watch your caffeine intake after noon. Maximizing sleep quality and quantity will be super helpful in losing weight while going through menopause.
