As much as we would all like to slay the sweet tooth dragon for good, that is simply not the reality for most of us. So, what does one do when their sweet tooth kicks in and you are ready to reach for an entire bag of Oreos?

Drink water.

I know this sounds silly, but when our bodies crave sugar, it may be a sign of dehydration. So, step one to fight off sweet tooth cravings is to drink up!

Make it fit your macros.

Once you’ve guzzled some water, if you are still craving something sweet, it’s okay to give in, but do so wisely. When following an IIFYM (if it fits your macros) approach to eating, be sure that your indulgence fits your macros for the day.

Pair it with something healthy.

If you are dying for a bag of M&M’s, throw them into a small bowl with some peanuts or almonds. Want some chocolate? Dip a piece of fruit into some melted cacao nibs, or throw a few nibs into some nut butter.

Make it worth it.

Don’t just throw any old thing in your mouth to satisfy your craving, choose something you really love and enjoy!

Choose wisely!

There are plenty of sweet things that are also healthy things. When possible, opt for those!

My top 5 go-to snacks for when that sweet tooth kicks in are:

  • Blueberries
  • Almond butter
  • Strawberries dipped in dark chocolate
  • Fruit smoothies
  • Dried fruit snacks

Avoiding artificial sweeteners will go a long way in your battle against the sweet tooth dragon. While it may be wise for you to cut out sweets all together for a period of time, it is okay to enjoy a few sweets, within your macros, on a regular basis. When you feel the sugar fairy calling your name, drink some water, make it worth it, and choose wisely!
