Carb Cycling: Is it just a fad?
Carb Cycling is not a fad diet, or quick fix; it is a lifestyle change that has significant impact on not only weight loss, but on your overall quality of life. I’ve talked a bit about carb cycling before, but here are some basics to consider if you’re thinking about incorporating carb cycling into your lifestyle.
What is carb cycling?
Carb cycling is an alteration of carbohydrate intake to prevent fat loss plateaus and keep your metabolism working effectively.
How does carb cycling work?
Carb cycling cycles your carb intake between high carb days and low carb days, while pairing those days with workouts best suited to help your body burn fat and build lean muscle. Within a set caloric limit, we manipulate our carbs to ensure optimal energy levels, have effective use of glycogen and stabilize hormone levels.
Who should try carb cycling?
If you have been eating clean and exercising but have noticed a plateau, then you may want to consider carb cycling. If you are experiencing decreased energy levels, having trouble sleeping, and are storing fat in your midsection...carb cycling might be for you. If you have never eaten clean, live a sedentary lifestyle and have over 100 pounds to lose, then carb cycling is not your ideal place to start. Carb cycling strategies are not hard to implement, but they are also not for complete newbies to a healthy lifestyle.
What are the benefits to carb cycling?
There are significant benefits to a carb cycling lifestyle including…
- Fat loss
- Increased energy
- Better sleep
- Improved moods
- Better satiety
Carb cycling also allows you flexibility while eating out, or on special occasions. And, it is something that easily fits into most lifestyles without feeling all consuming or overly stressful!
Some things to consider when carb cycling:
- You need to effectively pair your carb cycle with your workouts to see the best results.
- If you cut your carbs too low on low carb day, your body will actually start holding on to all of the carbs, acting in opposition to your weight loss goals. It is important to set your low carb day numbers accurately.
- Carbs can cause you to hold on to water weight, so this is something you need to be aware of as you go through your carb cycle. On high carb days you may see a slight increase in water retention.
- Carb cycling with healthy carbs is incredibly important. High carb days do not mean pigging out on donuts and sugary cereals. Foods like sweet potatoes and fruits are ideal carbs for your high carb days...so put down the Lucky Charms my friend!
