Low Carb Fad Diets - Keto

I’ve talked a ton about carb cycling and its incredible benefits. However, I still get lots of questions about low carb diets and/or Keto diets and why they are not as effective as carb cycling. So, I figured I would unpack that for you just a bit.

Low carb diets or Keto are all the rage.

The foundation of low carb diets or keto is to cut down on carbs or cut them out completely. In most cases, people who participate in these types of diets see significant weight loss, at first. Because they are cutting down on carbs, they see water weight come off relatively quickly. In addition, their body will reach into its fat stores for energy, once they have depleted their glycogen stores.

When people show off their initial results, it is typically a pretty impressive thing to see. This has led to quite a bit of buzz and creates even more interest in these types of diets. Celebrities have hopped on the bandwagon, and low carb diets and keto diets have become the new low fat diet. Keto is what all the cool kids are doing.

What we don’t always see is the hormonal damage, low energy levels and eventual weight gain that can occur as a result of a long term low carb diet.

Marketing.

In addition to word of mouth, marketers have hopped on the keto (low carb) bandwagon. As more and more people have talked about the benefits of a low carb lifestyle, companies have begun to capitalize on the craze, creating all types of low carb food products. This only perpetuates the cycle and creates more of a buzz. In every chain grocery store you can now find stickers touting the low carb benefits of chemically processed foods and demonizing carbs in general.

The thing about the low carb craze is that in most cases a low carb lifestyle isn’t sustainable. People feel depleted, lethargic, and deprived. Weight loss does happen and then so does weight gain. Your hormones, mental clarity and stress levels can also really suffer from cutting carbs out of your diet. Our bodies need all three macronutrients to function optimally, despite what the believers in low carb fad diets say.
