Drink Water to Lose Weight

We all know that to lose weight you need to make changes to both your diet and activity level. You have to be more active and learn to fuel your body effectively. However, there are several other components that play a role in weight loss, one of which is your water intake. Water increases your metabolism.

Research has shown that drinking 2 liters of water per day can significantly increase your metabolic rate, causing you to burn up to 96 more calories per day. (1) Cold water is even better for increasing your metabolic rate, because your body will use extra energy to warm the water prior to using it.

Water keeps you full.

Drinking water 30-45 minutes prior to your meals will make you feel fuller and eat less. While it is incredibly important you get enough calories in each day to fuel your body, it is also important you utilize strategies that keep you from overeating. Drinking water is super helpful in this department. In addition, I often advise clients to drink water prior to reaching for a snack, as our bodies often mistake thirst for hunger.

Water keeps you hydrated.

Because your body is 60% water, it is absolutely critical you keep it hydrated all day long. This is key for mental function, focus, and reducing headaches. Staying hydrated also means you will be able to complete more rigorous workouts and have energy to carry out your day to day activities. Dehydration can really zap your energy and cause you to become lethargic and foggy.

How much water should you drink?

I highly recommend you drink a tall glass of water as soon as you wake up - I do this DAILY. Also, be sure to choose water over other types of drinks when you are thirsty. If you feel a headache coming on, are a little groggy, or want to reach for an unhealthy snack, grab some water first; then aim for approximately 8-8oz. glasses of water per day. More is totally fine, but let this be your baseline.

It is incredibly important that you learn to listen to your body and be aware of the signs of dehydration, even when they are mild. If your body is dehydrated, it will work against your weight loss efforts because it’s working to preserve energy instead. Staying hydrated is key to shedding those unwanted pounds you’ve been holding on to. So my friends...drink up!
