Weight Training and Massage: The Importance of Regular Massage
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I think every woman will agree that an hour spent getting a massage is a great hour! And I enjoy the hour or two a month I spend with my massage therapist. But for me there is so much more than just spoiling myself with an hour to relax. I work my muscles hard, I spend hours a week building and training my muscles. I plan my time in the gym, I plan what and how I’m going to train, and I plan my recovery too. And a big part of that recovery is regular massage appointments.
Other than the obviously relaxation I gain from an hour on the table, what are the benefits? There are a lot! But I’ll talk about just a few.
Massage increases blood flow to your muscles, which helps get rid of the toxins that build up in your muscles. Not just during it but after as well. This is why it's great for decreasing recovery time.
Risk of injury also decreases. Your massage therapist knows your body and your muscles. He/she will be able to tell you what you're working too hard or what adjustments you might need to make in your training. They can help you correct your posture, and give you tip on small adjustments you should make. They're experts in muscles and have great wisdom for you.
By working and manipulating your muscles in a massage you're also able to increase your range of motion and flexibility. Flexibility is important not just in the gym but in everyday life. Increased flexibility can help prevent injury for little things like slips and falls.
Another amazing by-product of massage is that it teaches you to relax. I know it's a lesson I need to be reminded of every so often. And by learning how to relax, you're also learning how to fall asleep faster and your relaxed muscles will help you sleep better. And who doesn’t need more sleep?!
My masseuse has become as much a part of my training as any piece of equipment in the gym. Taking time to get a massage regularly has helped my training and helped me reach my goals faster! And seriously, who doesn’t love a massage?!
