A Guide to Better Health and Career - Part 1: Your Life, Your Rules
This is the beginning of a series of blog posts that focus on how you can create a better life for yourself. We all have different goals and a unique vision for our lives, so this series will focus on how you can get motivated to make change. Real change will set your life on a path that allows you to wake up every morning excited for what the day holds, excited for the journey and every moment that comes along with it.
My hope is to empower you to make positive shifts in your life that will help make you a better “you” as it relates to your career and health (Physical, Mental & Spiritual). We’ve all heard the “life is short” phrase -- but so many of us don’t take these simple words of wisdom seriously. It really is short. Think about how fast last month flew by. Too many people go through life unhappy because of their current situation, not realizing it’s in their power to have the life they want. Of course there are always limitations, but you really can set your life on a path that is more in-line with what you want for yourself and your family and what God wants for your life.
With that said, this is your life. And you set your feet on the path you want. If you wake up with no purpose, no intentions, and no drive to do anything, that’s a sign you need to examine where you are, and how you can set rules to give yourself the direction and vision you need.
I challenge you to sit down and make a list of all the things you don’t like about your life. Those aspects of your life you wish were different. Job, health, negative people, depression … whatever it is. Write it down.
Now, look at that list and make sub bullets on how you can make change for each one (within what God wants you to do). Not everything can be cut out right off the bat. For example, you may not be in the position to quit your job right away, but there are things you can do to set the pace so you can have a smooth transition from the job you dread, to a career you love.
This will be your list of action items. The next step is to spend time in prayer and either completely eliminate the negative things that are bringing you down, or take the first steps to changing the things that should remain in your life, but be improved upon.
For me this change started with taking my fitness business to the next level. After about a year of thinking about how “cool” it would be to be a personal trainer, I signed up for the course... I jumped in, not knowing what I was doing but just wanting to follow my dreams. I was wanting to change my life up a bit as I knew the social work career was no longer for me. So after 10 years in the field, I sold my case management business and took the next step of living the life I wanted. Was I nervous for this drastic change? YES! But I trusted God that this was the right move and He was leading me. Over the next 6 months, I studied and learned as much as I could about fitness, personal training, and being a fitness coach. And now, as it comes to about a year later, I can honestly say that I have found my true passion. I get to help people get fit and reach their potential, all while making a great income and having freedom in my career to raise my three daughters. I am in love with teaching others what I have learned.... I am able to help others, make a living, and be there for my family when they need me! Who could ask for more? I thank God every day for this life He has given me and I wake up every day to share my knowledge and change lives.
Let me tell you, I am living proof that when you start taking action on the areas of your life you want to change, you’ll notice you are happier and healthier. You will no longer be a bystander to your own life, watching it pass you by - you’ll participate fully, in every moment, and I promise you... it’ll feel amazing. Life's too short to live with a job or body you don’t love.
